January 12, 2012 12:00 AM

The 2012 convention of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation (LWF) will be held March 9-11 at the Clarion Inn & Suites Conference Center in Covington, Louisiana. The event will celebrate the Federation's 73rd year of conserving our natural resources and your right to enjoy them.

Convention pre-registrations are encouraged to aid in LWF's preparations for this annual event. Simply download and fill out the registration form and return it to the LWF office (fax: 225/344-6707; email- lwf@lawildlifefed.org; or mail: LWF, PO Box 65239, Baton Rouge LA 70896-5239). Be advised that we cannot guarantee the security of credit card information until it reaches our office, so you may prefer to pay by check.

Room rates for the Clarion Inn & Suites Conference Center range from $89-$99, and from $119-$199 for suites. Rates include complimentary hot plated breakfast for up to four guests per room. LWF's room block and rates are only guaranteed through February 24, 2012, so reserve your room now. Be sure to mention you are registering for the LWF Convention to guarantee these rates. Also, meeting rooms will be complimentary to LWF if a certain number of rooms are booked. Call (985) 893-3580 for hotel reservations. More details can be found on the room reservation flyer.

The program begins with a social event at 7 PM on Friday evening when members, supporters, delegates and guests will enjoy a fish fry and auction to raise funds for the LWF's conservation education and advocacy work. The night's featured guest speaker will be Bob Marshall, Outdoor Writer and Editor for the Times-Picayune. Admission to this event requires a ticket which is $25, or $20 for registered convention guests.

Debate on resolutions submitted by LWF affiliate organizations and directors will commence at 8:30 AM on Saturday in five Conservation Committees: Migratory, Forest and Upland Wildlife; Habitat Conservation and Management; Conservation Policy, Laws and Enforcement; Boating & Fresh/Saltwater Fisheries; and Environmental Quality. Committee meetings will run consecutively with appropriate breaks until 11:45 AM. All registered convention guests (tickets not required) are welcome to attend these committee meetings and observe this important process. However, voting and debate is limited to affiliate leaders and at-large directors, and experts they may call upon from the audience to clarify or render opinion based on professional/personal experience.

The Board of Directors Luncheon is scheduled for Noon-2 PM with a special presentation on the Protect our Paradise - Sportsmen for the Coast campaign by LWF Coastal Outreach Coordinator, Chris Macaluso. Federation officers and District Vice Presidents will be elected for the new term. Tickets to the luncheon are $20, and everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

If necessary, the committee meetings will re-convene at 2:15 PM to act on any remaining resolutions not debated from the morning session due to time constraints.

For those who do not wish to participate in the Saturday morning meetings, suggestions and information on area attractions will be provided before the convention. Sign up sheets will be available at the registration table. Although LWF will not be organizing a "spouses tour and luncheon" or providing transportation as in past conventions, folks with similar interests can get together and organize their own outings.

A highlight of the convention will be the Saturday evening presentation of the 48th Governor's State Conservation Achievement Awards at a festive banquet honoring individuals, businesses and organizations for outstanding accomplishments in 2011. At 6 PM there will be a cocktail reception held in honor of the award recipients, followed by the banquet and presentation of the awards at 7 PM. Kevin Davis, recently appointed Director of GOHSEP (Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness) and past President of St. Tammany Parish, will be the MC. More details of this event are forthcoming. Banquet tickets are $40 and include the cocktail reception.

The convention will close on Sunday morning after final action by the General Assembly of Delegates on the resolutions adopted by the conservation committees on Saturday.

Please call the LWF office at 225-344-6707 if you have any questions about the convention program or process.
