Extending the Hunting Season for Nutria

WHEREAS, the nutria population remains at high numbers, and

WHEREAS, the nutria continues to be a serious nuisance causing extensive damage to levees by burrowing, and to upland riverine vegetation and our coastal wetlands because of its appetite for wetland vegetation, and

WHEREAS, licensed recreational hunters could do more to help control damage to wetlands and levees by harvesting nutria.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Louisiana Wildlife Federation urges the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission to extend the nutria recreational hunting season past the close of the trapping season by up to 90 days.

Adopted by the Louisiana Wildlife Federation in convention assembled, 3 March 2002, in Marksville, Louisiana.
