The Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s sixth cohort of EV-CLC students attended the first of three in-person training sessions from October 31 to November 2 at the Louisiana Ecological Forestry Center at Hodges Gardens. Established in 2018, EV-CLC prepares undergraduate students from across Louisiana to become the next generation of conservation leaders.

Amid the longleaf pines where the historic Hodges Gardens once stood, students spent the weekend learning from conservation advocates, scientists, and practitioners. LWF board member Zac Burson opened with a discussion on how everyday outdoor enthusiasts can influence conservation when they choose to speak up for the places they love. Dr. Virginia Burkett, USGS Emeritus, followed with an engaging presentation on the impacts of global climate change on Louisiana’s future. LWF board member and U.S. Forest Service wildlife biologist Jonny Fryar also shared insights into career pathways in the Forest Service and the Kisatchie National Forest.
Students toured the Louisiana Ecological Forestry Center, observed active habitat restoration, and even spotted a Red Cockaded Woodpecker in the pines. This was an exciting highlight of the weekend.
Christopher Hill reflected, “Growing up in southwest Louisiana, I wanted to make a greater impact in protecting our ecosystems. Hearing from this weekend’s presenters showed me that with training and experience, anyone can help drive meaningful change.”
The next EV-CLC session will take place in Baton Rouge, where students will focus on coastal issues and continue building skills in advocacy, communication, and leadership.
LWF congratulates the 15 students selected for this year’s cohort. Their dedication and enthusiasm reflect a new generation that is ready to champion Louisiana’s wildlife, water, and habitats for years to come.
