National Wildlife Federation (NWF) recently released their Offshore Wind Film Series “Coast to Coast” that features responsible offshore wind development while avoiding, minimizing, and mitigating adverse impacts on marine and coastal habitats and the wildlife that rely on them. It features people from several areas of the country, including Louisiana.
NWF’s position is that when offshore wind energy is sited, planned, and developed responsibly, wildlife and people can both thrive. LWF agrees that the application of offshore wind projects should use the best available scientific and technological data available to ensure that science-based and stakeholder-informed decisions can be implemented for the protection of wildlife and critical wildlife habitat.
LWF has been monitoring wind energy development and discussing the environmental concerns related to this activity, with a particular focus on migratory birds. In February 2023, LWF adopted a resolution related to this emerging industry in Gulf waters. While LWF recognizes that the use of offshore wind can be used to meet state and national emissions reduction goals, LWF insists on strict standards, parameters, and barriers, related to wildlife and habitat protection. Just as importantly, LWF urges the development of this industry to include meaningful engagement with state and local governments and stakeholders from the outset.
While Louisiana has embraced the identity of a “working coast”, it is important to implement strategies that include a balance of sound wildlife habitat management practices within that type of structure. Identifying and protecting areas of critical need remain a priority for LWF and we support proven wildlife impact-reduction strategies and decommissioning plans that ensure long-term planning for all project development sites that are proven to reduce environmental impacts.
